Native to the west coast of Africa, more specifically to the Gulf of Guinea, the oil palm or oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is also found in sub-spontaneous settlements from Senegal to Angola.
In Brazil, it arrived at the hands of the Portuguese along with the first slaves, and found conditions favorable to its acclimatization, developing mainly on the coast of Bahia, between Ilhéus and Savior.
Today, producing areas are found in Amazonas, Amapá, Bahia and Pará, the latter being the largest producer of palm oil in the country, concentrating more than 80% of the planted area.
