The first elevator appeared in 1500 BC, in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), to transport goods. It was only in the 1st century BC that the device was adapted, in Rome, for domestic use and the transport of people. And, of course, they weren't powered by electricity: installed in Roman houses, they operated with cranks, turned by slaves. It wasn't until 1800 that an Englishman, whose name is unknown, used a steam engine to make elevators work.
