Japanese ceramist who lived in Brumadinho created a work of great expression, using a technique with burning in a wood oven
by Walter Sebastião
A singular artist wins her biggest exhibition: Toshiko Ishii (1911-2007). Japanese born in Kyoto, at the age of 20 moves to Brazil – a country about which she only knew that she had Indians and bananas – and if she installs at Fazenda Palhano, in Brumadinho (MG), after passing through Curitiba and São Paulo, due to respiratory problems in the husband. At 70, after finding quality clay in the place where she lives, she starts making ceramics using the bizen technique, burning in a wood oven for several days. Two decades of practice, study and research led her to the development and refinement of a language inspired by Japanese traditions, but which incorporates experiences from Minas Gerais. The delicacy of the decorative motifs and the expressive use of materials make Toshiko's work a small gem of the arts of Minas Gerais.
About 100 pieces by the artist, created between 1985 and 2012, are on display at BDMG Cultural and can be seen until 23 September. The exhibition is curated by Erli Fantini and Adel Souki, potters and friends of the Japanese woman. “Toshiko Ishii always amazes me. When organizing the exhibition, we see how she was a woman of fiber, sensitive, despite her fragile appearance”, says Erli, without hiding how much she misses her friend. “Besides being a ceramist, she was an expressive, delicate designer”, she adds, highlighting the whim in the elaboration of the pieces and the care with the finish. Erli points to the drawings at the bottom of tea cups as an example, so that whoever was in front of the wearer could also enjoy the beauty of the object. “Like the embroiderers, for Toshiko it's not enough for the front of the embroidery to be beautiful, but the inside must also be beautiful”, compares the curator.
Another example of the ceramist's care is the “delicate carving” on the feet of various pieces. Erli says that Toshiko's care went as far as ordering the straws surrounding the piece to be taken to the oven, resulting, after firing, in a visuality of delicate plastic power. The friend explains that the artist had carefully meditated on the exploration and choice of materials, "whose original color brings the soul of the clay, as it can only be achieved due to the minerals present in the clay and the kiln it works with", account. “Toshiko Ishii was a sage. Her pottery has her hand and her life”, she says, recalling that a dish made at the end of its life brings the ideogram into existence. […]
