There are thousands of butterflies in the world. But some of them only occur in Brazil. This is the case of the beach butterfly. Its elongated body supports four beautiful black and white wings, with reddish designs. But before transforming into the beautiful animal, which visits flowers and beautifies the landscape, it has a long life story to tell.
It all starts with laying eggs, about a hundred, that the beach butterfly lays on the leaves of a vine known as a vase. When these eggs hatch, a caterpillar comes out of each one, which feeds on the leaves of the jar. After 60 days, the caterpillar stops eating and weaves a cocoon around itself, transforming itself into a pupa. Inside the cocoon there is a phenomenon known as metamorphosis. In three weeks, a beautiful butterfly appears from within. Its life cycle is short: it ends soon after the reproduction and laying of the eggs, which takes an average of 25 days.
Do you want to know why the beach butterfly only lays its eggs on leaves and branches of a vase or very close to it? Because this plant has a substance called lanthanin, which, despite being quite toxic to other species, later becomes the animal's protective shield in nature. Caterpillars, when feeding on the plant, store the lanthanin in their body, and the substance remains in the animal's body even after transforming into a butterfly. Animals that like to eat butterflies, like some birds, avoid eating this species, because of the horrible and unforgettable bitter taste of its body. Thus, she is protected from predators.
But it is because it depends exclusively on the jar to guarantee its replacement that the beach butterfly is at risk of extinction. The wet plains of the state of Rio de Janeiro – like swamps and swamps where this plant grows – have undergone major transformations, mainly due to the destruction of the native vegetation of these downloaded. To make matters worse, the restinga areas near the beach, where the vase also grows, are disappearing to make way for condominiums of houses and apartments. In addition, the species was, throughout history, hunted to compose paintings and other decorative objects. Wouldn't it be better if the beach butterfly could fly free?
