The website The Watercolor World 

is bringing together more than 80,000 watercolor paintings from the 1400s to the 1800s. The authorships are diverse, as are the themes, which include fauna, flora, sea and land landscapes and even people.

“Watercolors are an invaluable record of the world before photography,” said Javad Marandi, chairman of the advisory board of The Watercolor World, in a press release.

Watercolor paintings were once seen as less dignified than classical art because they often dealt with flowers and beautiful landscapes, something considered irrelevant. But they conquered their space at a time _____ when photography did not yet exist, enabling artists to document the world around them.
