Both times throughout the year, when the sun is exactly above the equator, the spring and autumn seasons begin. Those times when the duration of the day is equal to that of the night at every point on Earth are called the equinoxes. Summer and winter, in turn, begin at the time of solstices, when the Sun is at its maximum in the North or at its maximum in the South. Through mathematical calculations and constant observation of the sky, astronomers are able to predict the exact day, hour, minute and second of these phenomena, which happen each year.
