It was during the period of the Roman Empire – from the 1st to the 4th century – that the seasons were named spring, summer, autumn and winter. The names come from Latin Cousin Vere, summer, autumn and Hybernus. During summer the days are warmer and longer. In winter, the opposite happens. Why?
The straight line joining the North and South poles is called the Earth axis. When the Earth rotates around the Sun, the Earth's axis is slightly tilted in relation to the plane of motion. Because of this inclination, light and heat from the Sun do not reach every point on Earth with the same intensity throughout the year. Depending on the time of year, the southern hemisphere may receive more solar heat than the northern hemisphere.
In this case, it's summer in the south and winter in the north. When the Northern Hemisphere receives the most heat, it is summer in the North and winter in the South.
