When we watch TV, read magazines, or browse the internet, we often find advertisements that encourage mental exercise. Several brain exercise programs stimulate people's mental alertness, giving them daily training – perform tasks ranging from memorizing lists and solving puzzles to calculating the number of trees in a park. This may seem like a publicity device, but in reality it has a real foundation in neurobiology. Recent research, although done mainly with rats, indicates that learning enhances the survival of new neurons in the adult brain. And the more challenging the problem, the greater the number of neurons involved in the process. These neurons are believed to be available to help in situations where the mind is overloaded. It appears that mental training strengthens the brain in the same way that physical exercise shapes muscles. (…)
