It is in the streams of the Atlantic Forest that this little fish lives. Your preference is for cool, calm waters. When it encounters a stronger current, it burrows in to protect itself.
The sarapó have a nocturnal habit, that is, it hides during the day and takes advantage of the darkness of the night to go out, reproduce and look for its favorite food: aquatic insects! As you can't see much in the dark, this fish, upon noticing the presence of prey, produces a small electrical discharge that paralyzes its target and makes it easy to catch.
So, is the sarapo an electric fish? Yes, but unlike its relatives - like the fish why, whose shock can make a grown man faint -, the electricity produced by the sarapó is just enough to help it catch the aquatic insects it used to. eat.
As far as reproduction is concerned, the female sarapó lays about a thousand eggs at once. Sounds like a lot, but after a predator's attack there might not be any eggs left. To protect them, the parents keep everyone together in a nest and are always around.
If, of course, it is already difficult for the sarapó to reach adulthood, imagine if the rivers they inhabit suffered with the continuous discharge of sewage, pollution and siltation, that is, with the obstruction that results from the logging? For that is exactly what is happening.
Researchers still know very little about the sarapó, but they agree on one point: the species is already threatened with extinction.
