Alex was a gray parrot (Psittacus erithacus) very famous. He participated in several experiments conducted by researcher Irene Pepperberg between 1977 and 2007. The tests to which Alex was subjected were aimed at better understanding the development of language and cognition in birds, themes that were still little explored at the time.
In this book, Irene tells about her relationship with Alex over the thirty years that the parrot lived in her laboratory. The researcher also talks about her professional life and the various challenges she faced in the academic world. Her initial training was in Chemistry, but since she was a child Irene had admired parrots. She chose the African Gray Parrot (also known as the Gray Parrot) to perform her studies, as the species finds it easier to imitate the human voice, particularly the English language.
The parrot Alex had a “strong personality” and was the star of numerous reports. This helped to popularize the results of the pioneering research, which showed that birds were in fact much smarter than previously thought. Alex could count to six, recognize colors and distinguish shapes, compare sizes, and even tell what material the objects presented to him were made of. He shared the laboratory with two other gray parrots (Arthur and Griffin), but at the time he was the oldest and most responsive bird to training. The name Alex is an acronym for Avian Learning Experiment.
