In 50 BC, the Roman Empire dominates the entire region around Gaul, except for the village itself. After yet another attempt to conquer it, some of the Roman senators begin to fear that the inhabitants of the Gallic village are something like gods.

To keep his throne, Julius Caesar proposes an agreement to the Gauls and sends the village a list with twelve tasks inspired by the works of Hercules, which could only be performed by beings superiors. If the Gauls win the challenge, the monarch admits defeat. Otherwise, they would surrender to the Roman Empire and become slaves.

The proposal is accepted. Asterix, for being the smartest, and Obelix, for being the strongest, are chosen to represent the people.

With the burden of not failing in a single task, the pair leaves to fulfill the twelve jobs and maintain the Gallic dignity.
