How do birds chew?

The first known birds had teeth. With evolution, they lost their teeth and developed beaks suitable for various foods. For example: eagles and hawks have curved beaks for pulling out pieces of meat; that of parrots and macaws is rounded and strong to break hard seeds. In addition, birds have an organ called the gizzard. It sits close to the stomach, has strong muscles and grinds food – performing the function of the teeth. Some birds eat pebbles that are lodged in the gizzard and help to crush the food.
