Yes, this is a book about vampires! Not vampire bats (although they also appear in the story), but fictional vampires themselves, creatures of the night that drink human blood and terrorize people. And why is this book being talked about on a blog about birds? Because the main characters in the story are two biologists: a bird specialist (ornithologist) and a mammal specialist (mastozoologist)!
The Vampire of the Atlantic Forest it's a fantastic literature book, but it's contextualized in a very real world. The Atlantic Forest in the interior of the state of São Paulo is described in a passionate way, as only someone who knows this region well could do. The author, Martha Algiers, is an ornithologist and brought much of her experience in this area to the book. No wonder that the research work of the pair of biologists is reported in detail, showing how data is collected in field, recording bird species, identifying footprints, catching bats, writing bureaucratic reports technical…
Quick and pleasant reading (you just can't say it's light because of the eating habits of the vampire from São Paulo), this book is an example of well-done scientific dissemination. I suggest it to everyone who wants to know a little more about the work and challenges faced by Brazilian biologists, with a good dose of mythology and suspense!
