In 2009, in pain, Tais went to a dentist. But the experience would be traumatic. Instead of diagnosis and treatment, at the end of the consultation she was recommended to seek help from the hospital. “When I got there, they said I had an infection. That the dentist had opened my tooth and hadn't closed it, which made my problem worse”, she recalls. The young woman, then 15 years old, was hospitalized for a month. She lost six pounds. Cured of infection, she still needed to treat the root canal. That's when she remembered Daniel Salles, dentist from the “Turma do Bem”, who took care of her sister. “My name was on the NGO's waiting list. As my sister's treatment was already ending, I took her place”, she says. In addition to curing the tooth that started the saga, Taís treated cavities and put on braces. “I have more self-esteem, people say I'm prettier”, says the young woman, proud of her new smile.
