Álvares de Azevedo

The poet Manoel Antônio Álvares de Azevedo, or simply Álvares de Azevedo, as he became known, was born in the Brasil Império, in São Paulo, on September 12, 1831.

As a boy he went to Rio de Janeiro, where he began his studies. In 1847, at age 16, he returned to São Paulo to study at the Faculty of Law and his literary productions quickly became known. Romantic and sentimental, he was called by Maneco's colleagues and family, and was a writer who moved in various paths as a short story writer, playwright, poet and essayist.

Experts say he is an exponent of Brazilian Gothic literature, because he tended to work with opposites like love and death, Platonism and sarcasm, optimism and pessimism, good and bad.

He wrote classic works in our literature, such as the “Twenty Years Lira Poetic Anthology”, the theater play “Macário” and the “Contos de noite na taverna”.

He has also worked on translations such as the fifth act of Shakespeare's “Othello” and Lord Byron's “Parisina”.

He produced so much and so quickly that he seemed to know that life had little time for him and that death would reach his 20s.

His work was edited after his death. He belonged to the second generation of Romanticism.
