“Engenho Teatral” lives against the grain: unlike American films and Brazilian soap operas, it does not represent the world as a conflict of characters. Life is not limited to personal, affective relationships, psychology and the character of this or that person. Personal stories, fables, do not always account for fundamental relationships between men.
Sugar, gold or Brazilian coffee were once the main commodities in the world. What was left of this wealth for slaves, miners, colonists? Who served this unbridled exploration? Today, we are again living in a similar situation: the discovery of oil in the deep layers of our coast (in the so-called pre-salt) points to a new surge of absurd wealth. Who will take this?
“Engenho” asks itself: is it interested in representing this issue on stage? And is it explained through the character and affective and personal relationships of the president of Petrobrás, Shell or the president of Brazil? Do the stories, quarrels and intrigues in the mold of the American film and the soap opera address issues like this, which are fundamental in our life and destiny?
Obviously, the forms, the way of representing life that prevails in the cultural industry, are not gratuitous, they are neither neutral nor innocent and, much less, reflect a supposed human nature. But they form our taste, our way of looking, feeling, thinking and re-elaborating the world. This shape defines a pattern (it can be the global pattern): by planting in our brain an apparently “natural” way of being, thinking and feeling, the standard also determines what is good and what is bad, what is good and what is not, what can and cannot, what we want or don't to want. That is why, many times, moved, we think and feel: “this is exactly how life is” or “today, the chapter of the soap opera was rocking” or “that movie is awesome!”. In the opposite sense, we lose interest in certain subjects or ways of representing them: "ah, it's very boring!" (and this, almost always, turns against what is outside established standards; still, we think that we think that way, that this is the “natural” way, that this it is part of "our" "human nature" and not that it was produced in us by a story and interests).
