It had rained a lot every night. There were huge pools of wet water in the lower parts of the land. In places, the earth, so wet, had turned to mud. Sometimes the feet just slipped on it. Sometimes, more than slipping, the feet got stuck in the mud up to the ankles. It was difficult to walk. Pedro and Antônio were transporting baskets full of cocoa in a truck to the place where they were to dry. At one point, they realized that the truck would not go through the quagmire that lay ahead. They passed. They got out of the truck. They looked at the puddle, which was a problem for them. They crossed the six feet of mud, defended by their long boots. They felt the thickness of the gunk. They thought. They discussed how to solve the problem. Then, with the help of some stones and dry tree branches, they gave the ground the minimum consistency so that the truck's wheels could pass without getting stuck. Pedro and Antônio studied. They tried to solve it and then found a precise answer.
It is not just studied at school.
Pedro and Antônio studied while they worked.
Studying is taking a serious and curious attitude towards a problem.
This serious and curious attitude in trying to understand things and facts characterizes the act of studying. It does not matter that the study is carried out at the time and place of our work, as in the case of Pedro and Antônio, who we have just seen. It doesn't matter that the study is done in another place and at another time, like the study we do in the Culture Circle. In any case, the study always requires this serious and curious attitude in trying to understand the things and facts we observe. A text to be read is a text to be studied. A text to be studied is a text to be interpreted. We cannot interpret a text if we read it without attention, without curiosity; if we give up on reading when we encounter the first difficulty. What would be the production of cocoa in that field if Pedro and Antônio had given up on continuing their work because of the mud?
If a text is sometimes difficult, insist on understanding it. He works on it as Antônio and Pedro worked on the mudslide problem. Studying requires discipline. Studying is not easy because studying is creating and recreating and not repeating what others say. Studying is a revolutionary duty!
