Comets are made from the same raw materials as the planets of the Solar System, formed billions of years ago. They are made of ice and rock dust. Scientists believe that they may have been born together with the Sun and the other planets, but they were swept to the periphery of the Solar System, that is, to a region far from the Sun.
Like the planets of the solar system, they revolve around the Sun and, as their orbit approaches the king star, they can be seen here from Earth. When the comet approaches the Sun, heat causes the ice to change into a gaseous state. There, the rocky dust particles spread through the gases existing in the star. That's when comets look like a bright smoke trail or a “hair,” which is the meaning of the word in Greek. As they move away from the solar heat, they turn into simple balls of ice and dust again.
