THERMAL ENERGY

The temperature of bodies is related to thermal energy. The more thermal energy there is in a body, the higher its temperature. To determine the temperature of a body, a thermometer is used.

When two bodies have different temperatures, heat transfer occurs between them, until the two bodies reach the same temperature. Thus, the coldest body heats up and the hottest one cools.

There are materials that conduct heat well, such as iron and aluminum, while others are thermal insulators, such as styrofoam and wood.

Production and uses of thermal energy

Thermal energy can be obtained using sunlight or burning different renewable or non-renewable fuel materials, for example.

In wood stoves, wood replaces natural gas, which serves as fuel in conventional stoves.

In solar heating panels, heat is captured and transferred to the water, which is heated.

In some industrial processes, such as steel production, a large amount of thermal energy is required, which is generated by burning coal.

In thermoelectric plants, thermal energy, obtained by burning coal, natural gas or oil, is transformed into electrical energy.
