A comet can appear more than once to Earth's inhabitants. So the first question scientists ask when they record a comet close to the Sun is: is this the first time that comet has appeared?
In fact, registering a comet is far from easy. To understand how such a discovery works, let's think about the following: the most apparent object that can be observed with the naked eye, in excellent visibility conditions (which is usually very difficult to obtain), it would be thousands of times brighter than a comet. In addition, the distance from Earth must be taken into account, as seeing such an object challenges the observational power of telescopes.
