The Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a huge fish, measuring up to five meters in length. It is usually found in the deep, icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, near the North Pole. It is considered a slow animal compared to other sharks, but it will
The news originates in Norway. Marine biologists there researched the lenses of sharks' eyes and this allowed them to estimate the lifetime of some of them. The 400-year-old female breaks all records, but she is followed by two males with ages estimated at 335 and 392 years. Imagine how many adventures these animals have lived in all this time at the bottom of the sea!
The Atlantic waters near the arctic region – the North Pole – appear to contain some of the oldest vertebrate animals in the world. It is also home to the previous age record: the Greenland Whale (Balaena mysticetus), which reaches 211 years. […] With so many interesting and ancient animals in the region, scientists suspect that the waters there must contribute to all this longevity.
It has long been known that sharks are fish that tend to take a long time to start to reproduce. In fact, this has been one of the causes that explain how dangerous fishing for these animals can be without thinking about the future, because the fish can be caught even before leaving descendants.
It was a big surprise to find out that the Greenland shark only mate when it reaches about four meters in length and is about 150 years old. As the species was heavily fished in the 1950s, researchers are concerned and say that populations of these animals are only now recovering. This novelty brings important consequences for the protection of nature and great challenges for the preservation of shark species in the world.
