The tear is produced all the time by the tear glands, which are like little bags of cells near the eyes. It has the function of keeping our eyes moist and clean from the dirt in the air, as well as helping to heal our eyes when they get hurt. But if the tear is always produced, why is it only sometimes that it flows?
It turns out that there is a channel, like a straw, that connects our eyes and nose, and it joins our throat causing us to swallow the fluid produced by the tear glands. However, when we are feeling a very strong emotion, such as sadness, we produce more tears than usual. Did you know that this liquid we swallow is different from what flows out when we cry?
Crying is our body's natural reaction to some pain or feeling. When our crying is emotional, our tear releases a substance called enkephalin, and it works as a pain reliever that helps relieve pain and tension. That's why we feel better after letting our tears go. Tears also act as a cry for help when we can't handle our feelings alone, causing someone else to reach out for emotional support.
I know that we can often be uncomfortable crying in public, and at these times it's important to find an empty corner so that we don't hold back tears.
