How kind and hardworking the little squirrel was! She thanked the smallest favor with a smile and always had a cheerful, uplifting phrase for anyone who was sad or hurt.
Well, winter was approaching and the far-sighted little squirrel worked hard to gather the nuts she needed. Surviving the cold, long months when snow covers the woods is a delicate problem.
When the little squirrel had gathered enough walnuts, she noticed that some were missing from her homemade store. Distressed, she went looking for possible footprints. She soon found a tiny footprint on the sand. She followed closely until she found a group of ants carrying pieces of walnut on their backs. It had been them!
Esquilinha, understanding, let them go and went back to her house without saying a word. Unfortunately, the winter was longer than usual, and in the last few weeks of this season, the squirrel noticed that she was almost running out of food.
That same day, numerous little ants came to the squirrel house. Each one had a piece of walnut. The one who appeared to be her boss, she came forward to her companions and said:
"Squirrel, we haven't forgotten her wonderful gesture towards us, before the beginning of winter." Now we hear that you ran out of food because of us. So, accept the nuts that we bring you and receive our immense thanks.
