Born in São Paulo on August 4, 1909, Roberto Burle Marx was the son of Cecília Burle from Pernambuco and German Jew Wilhelm Marx. It was his mother, a talented musician, who introduced the boy to two of his greatest loves: music and plants. She was also the one who helped him to form his first collection of plants, at the age of eight, when they were already living in the Leme neighborhood, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
As a teenager, in 1928, Roberto spent a period in Germany to treat a problem with his eyesight. There he had the opportunity to visit exhibitions by great painters, such as Van Gogh and Picasso. He was so impacted by those works that he decided to become a painter.
