STATUTE OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS - ECA

The Child and Adolescent Statute is in the name given to Law No. 8069, which was enacted in July 1990.

At ECA, up to 12 years old are considered children and between 12 and 18 years old are adolescents. In special cases, adolescence can be considered from 12 to 21.

With the ECA, protection mechanisms for children and adolescents emerged in the areas of health, education, work and social assistance.

Rights:

  • Do not suffer any type of violence, whether physical or psychological;
  • Being able to express your thoughts, tastes and religion;
  • Have access to decent health conditions, with medical and dental assistance, from the gestation stage to adolescence;
  • Living with the family and the community;
  • Have access to quality education, culture, leisure and sport;
  • Be protected from child labor;
  • To have the protection of a family, whether natural or adopted;
  • From the day of birth, having the right to a name and nationality, thus becoming a Brazilian citizen.

In addition to the ECA, another important law is the Universal Declaration of Children's Rights, promulgated in 1959 by the United Nations and which is valid throughout the world and also provides for certain duties of minors.

  • Respect parents and guardians;
  • Attend school and meet the stipulated workload for your grade;
  • Respect teachers, educators and other school employees;
  • Respect others and their differences (such as religion, social class or skin color);
  • Participate in family and community activities;
  • Keep clean and preserve public spaces and environments;
  • Know and comply with the established rules;
  • Respect yourself;
  • Participate in cultural, sporting, educational and leisure activities;
  • Whenever you have doubts about your rights and duties, seek legal guardian or guardianship advice;
  • Protect the environment.
