These are the bees that already lived in Brazil long before the introduction of the foreign Apis mellifera (popularly known as European, Italian or African), producer of honey commonly found on the market.

Bees in this group, represented by hundreds of species, in addition to producing different honeys, do not have a stinger, being docile and easy to handle. The raising of native bees (meliponiculture) is an activity closely linked to backland customs and their development has collaborated to increase the income of small farmers and, at the same time, to conserve the ecosystems where occur.
