the armadillo

It is easy to recognize an armadillo by the hard carapace that this animal has on its back. The ball armadillo, like other armadillos, has a protective carapace, but it has another very original defense: it curls up, taking the shape of an almost perfect ball!

Also called wild-cat armadillo, this animal only occurs in Brazil and is currently threatened with extinction. Unlike other armadillos, their well-developed claws are not adapted for digging into the ground and making burrows. To defend himself, he hides in the dens of the other armadillos or does what we've just discovered – he bends his body to the point of becoming a very resistant sphere due to the bony plates of his carapace.

The armadillo has other curious aspects: it walks on the tips of its claws. In addition to that dancer's way, he walks almost at a trot, typical of animals that move at moderate speeds. The female of the armadillo has one to two pups per litter. The diet of this species includes some plants and insects, especially ants and termites.

In the last thirty years, seeing this resident of the interior of Brazil is something increasingly rare. Although it can dodge its natural predators with its ability to curl up, the armadillo is easy prey for hunters in the region, who capture it to eat its meat.

To further aggravate the situation, the Caatinga, habitat of this armadillo, is a biome that is very much threatened by logging, whether for use as charcoal or to make room for agriculture, as the soil, although dry, is very nutritious.
