The microscopic scales that form the wings of butterflies have different pigments, forming colors and patterns. This is used for the butterflies to communicate and identify themselves (the male can recognize the female, for example), as well as helping the animal to camouflage itself in the environment. Colors like red tend to ward off predators as they can indicate a high risk of toxicity. Did you know that some species are capable of developing new colors, making small changes in the wing structures, to camouflage themselves and keep away predators?
