Syllables and their classifications.

This is a Portuguese language activity aimed at fourth or fifth year students, in this article we will present the concept of syllable and its various forms of classification.

SYLLABLE

Syllable is one or more phonemes pronounced in a single voice, every syllable is based on a vowel.

The classification of syllables can vary in terms of the number of syllables, or the position of the stressed syllable.

  • As for the number of syllables:

– monosyllables: it has only one syllable (um, color, sun);

– disyllables: it has two syllables (ca-sa, key, organ, pi-pa);

– trisyllables: it has three syllables (ca-der-no, ca-ne-ta, ash-ro)

– polysyllables: it has more than three syllables (ma-ra-cu-ja, in-fe-liz-men-te).

  • As for the location of the stressed syllable:

stressed syllable it is the most intensely pronounced, the stressed syllable does not always have a graphic accent. According to the location of the stressed syllable we can classify the words as:

– oxytones: when the stressed syllable is the last in the word.

ma-ra-cu-already, ca-faith, re-with-per

– paroxytones: when the stressed syllable is the penultimate of the word.

here-I gave-breed-frog-to have, me-sa

– proparoxytones: when the stressed syllable is the second-to-last of the word.

yes-la-ba, me-ta-fi-s-ca, lam-pa-da

VOCAL MEETING

vowel encounter it is the union of vowels and semivowels.

– diphthong: it is the union in the same syllable, of a vowel and a semivowel or a semivowel and a vowel. Diphthongs can be:

* increasing: semivowel + vowel

* decreasing: vowel + semivowel

v. s.v.

* oral: when the vowel is oral

* nasals: when the vowel is nasal

– tritongo: it is when a semivowel + vowel + semivowel are found in the same syllable, they can be oral or nasal.

* oral: when you have an oral vowel

* nasals: when it has a nasal vowel

– hiatus: is when the two vowels meet in different syllables

CONSONANT MEETING

consonant meeting is the union of two or more consonants joined together without the presence of a vowel, both consonants being pronounced, they can be perfect or imperfect.

– perfect: when the consonants are in the same syllable

– imperfect: when consonants are in separate syllables

DIGRAPH

Digraph it is the meeting of two letters that are pronounced in a single sound, there are two types of digraphs, the consonant and the vowel.

  • consonant digraph it is the meeting of two consonants pronounced in a single sound, these two consonants can be in the same syllable or in different syllables.

  • vowel digraphs occurs when two letters represent a vowel phoneme, some vowel digraphs are:

am, an: tamhuhantar;

in, in: tinwow wenyou;

im, in: thereimpair, tinture;

om, on: sombra, contar;

one, one: nonea, munof.
