The animals and plants that inhabit deserts have special abilities to maintain internal humidity. Scorpions and other insects have a harder exoskeleton (the carapace) than normal. It works like a tank, keeping heat out. Mammals and small reptiles are holed up all day. They only go out to feed at night, when it's colder. In addition to not burning in the sun, the environment inside the burrow is more humid, due to the stifling of the animals' breathing.
