Mahogany: just steps away from extinction

The Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is a native Amazonian tree, more common in southern Pará. It also takes place in Acre, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia and Tocantins. Countries like Mexico and Peru also register the occurrence of the species.

The tree can be found in climax, terra firme, clayey forest. The plant grows fast, and it can reach four meters at two years of age. The trunk width varies between 50 and 80cm in diameter. Mahogany blooms in November and January. Its fruits ripen in the month of September and last until mid-November. The tree is ornamental when used in afforestation of parks and gardens.

the caterpillar Hypsypyla grandella, known as the mahogany borer, is a threat to Brazilian mahogany. It attacks the tree, preventing its development, especially in reforested areas, where the density is much higher than in the forest. Planting other species nearby can alleviate the negative effects of the mahogany borer.

Mahogany wood is widely used in the production of furniture. Many appreciate the material for its ease of work, stability and durability. After polishing, the wood has a shiny reddish-brown appearance that draws attention to its beauty. Mahogany is used in luxury furniture, decorative objects, panels, interior finishes, among others. It is also used in the production of musical instruments, especially guitars and guitars, for its characteristic timbre and sound resonance, which tends to the medium-low range.

Mahogany is in serious danger of extinction. One of the reasons is the illegal extraction of timber, which also causes devastation in the Amazon rainforest. This is because mahogany has a high commercial value and acceptance in the international market. The species has already disappeared from large areas of the Amazon and only survives in regions with difficult access and in protected areas. But even the protected areas don't deter illegal loggers, who clear roads through the woods in search of valuable mahogany trees. Illegal logging and lumber hauling lead to the destruction of up to 30 nearby trees, which further aggravates deforestation.

The exploration, transport and commercialization of Brazilian mahogany have been suspended in Brazil since October 2001, for means of Normative Instruction, edited by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).
