On August 31, 1919, José Gomes Filho was born, who would become known throughout the country as Jackson do Pandeiro. The taste for music started at home, since his mother, Flora Mourão, was a singer of coco, a northeastern musical rhythm. Despite all the misery in which he lived, it was still in his childhood that this man from Alagoa Grande started to play the zabumba, and then went through the drums and bongos, until he reached the tambourine.
Jackson do Pandeiro was a great composer and instrumentalist, who left over 400 recordings, contributing especially to the dissemination of northeastern rhythms. “Whoever knows Jackson do Pandeiro the most must know about 50 songs or a little more. Nobody is aware of the richness and grandeur of his work”, said Fernando Moura to the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. Moura is the author of the biography “Jackson do Pandeiro – O Rei do Ritmo” (Publisher 34).
Jackson do Pandeiro is cited as a strong artistic influence by several musicians, such as Gilberto Gil, Alceu Valença, Moraes Moreira, João Bosco, Lenine, Chico César, among others. Among the best known songs, immortalized in their interpretation, are Chiclete com Banana, Sebastiana, O Canto da Ema, Um a Um and Forró in Limoeiro. The artist died at age 62, on July 10, 1982.
