The number of koalas has been decreasing drastically. The Australian AKF Foundation,
Australian Koala Foundation, estimates that there are fewer than 100,000 koalas in the wild. Since the colonization of Australia, according to data from the AKF, more than 80% of the areas with eucalyptus have been destroyed, in addition to hunting koalas to use their coats. In recent years, the biggest problem for koalas has been urban growth, which leads to the deforestation of various forests (whether for food cultivation, construction of homes or factories, among other purposes) where koalas live, causing habitat loss and increased competition for food and territory for koalas remaining.
Due to changes in the ecosystem, many eucalyptus trees become sick and die, reducing the amount of food available to the koalas. In addition, Australia faces long periods of drought, which are difficult for koalas, also causing fires, particularly in summer.
When forests are cleared or burn down, many koalas flee and die from being run over, or attacked by dogs and cats. If they survive, they suffer periods of stress and are affected by illnesses such as conjunctivitis. In the wild, the dingo – a species of wild dog – is one of the few predators of the koala, although it does not pose a major threat to adult koalas.
Today, koalas are found in eastern Australia, both free in the wild and in sanctuaries raised in the states of Victoria and Queensland. However, despite efforts to build protected areas, human interference in the environment is still the biggest problem faced by koalas.
