Inside the submarine, there are internal tanks, with valves. When you want to sink, the tanks fill with water and the air inside them is compressed. To float, these tanks are filled with compressed air, which expels water, making the submarine less dense than it is.
This “buoy and sink” is controlled by a command that regulates the air inside the submarine, sometimes compressing it to let the water in, sometimes letting it occupy the tanks, taking the water out of its inside.
In a nutshell, the basic functioning of the submarine depends on controlling its density! Do not forget!
