(Aesop's Fable retold by Ana Maria Machado)
Two friends were traveling along a road when, suddenly, a bear appeared.
Before the animal saw them, one of the men ran to a tree by the side of the road, hung on to a branch and managed to pull the body up and get hidden among the leaves. The other one wasn't as fast and, as he was very heavy, he didn't have the strength to climb on his own. He hung there for a while, and when he realized that it would be impossible to escape that way, he threw himself on the ground and pretended to be dead.
When the bear got very close, it was walking around the man smelling him everywhere, the poor guy held his breath and lay still, only with his heart pounding.
They say that bears do not attack corpses and it must be true, because the animal ended up giving up, convinced that the man had really died. Ended up leaving.
When there was no more danger, the traveler who was in the tree came down. Curious, he asked the other what was it that the bear whispered in his ear so much, when he put his nose to his ear.
– Oh, he was advising me never again to travel with a friend who leaves me alone at the first sign of danger!
It is in difficult times that we know the sincerity of friends.
