Olímpio had business in Belem. At least once a week he went to Bethlehem. The journeys were long and tiring, especially for him, who couldn't sleep on the plane. He was completely sleepless, he paid attention to the other passengers sleeping, and he was envious of that security, that fearlessness that put them to sleep. Consciously he wasn't afraid, only he couldn't sleep. He leaned his head against the cool glass of the window and looked out into the darkness of the night. The roar of engines ripping through the closed, endless world of night.
Sometimes there was light and stars, but loneliness weighed heavily. He spent hours looking at the navigation light on the wing, the engine fire that daylight doesn't let you see. A floating walnut shell delivered to invisible forces. He wasn't afraid, in the middle of the plane he coldly jotted down the sensations. […]
