Salar de Uyuni

Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, concentrating around 10 billion tons of salt. Have you ever imagined a place like this?! With so much salt, people take the opportunity to make bricks with the material and, thus, build houses and hotels. This true salt desert occupies more than 10 thousand square kilometers, something comparable to twice the city of Brasília, in the Federal District.

The Salar's soil is formed by several layers of different types of salt, which reach more than 120 meters deep! The surface is a crust of sodium chloride, the salt we use in the kitchen, with a thickness that, depending on the place, can be from a few centimeters to meters. Below it are brines of sodium, lithium and magnesium chlorides, interspersed with layers of clay.
