Even if you still don't know very well who Monteiro Lobato was, you may have already heard about some of the characters that this Brazilian writer invented: Emília, Narizinho, Visconde de Sabugosa, Dona Benta, Tia Anastácia… All of them, and several others, are part of the stories of Sítio do Picapau Yellow. Written by Monteiro Lobato, the adventures of this group have even become television programs, which were very successful between the 1970s and 1980s and the beginning of the 2000s.
And did you know that January 1, 2019 marks a very important moment in the history of everything Monteiro Lobato wrote? On that date, the works of the author, considered the father of children's literature in Brazil, will enter what is called the public domain. This happens when a writer's death turns 70 and means that everything he has done can be used to create drawings, plays, musicals and other productions without the need to pay for the rights to use this material.
I'm looking forward to finding out what new developments may come up involving Monteiro Lobato's characters from 2019 onwards. While I wait, I take the opportunity to indicate the reading of my favorite book by the author: “Memories of Emília”. That's exactly what the title says. Emília, a rag doll from Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, decides to write her own memoirs, as in a book about her life.
While trying to put her wildest thoughts on paper, Emilia recalls funny moments she lived on the farm. And she tells everyone how she came to the world: “(…) I was born from an old skirt of Aunt Anastácia. And I was born empty. Only after I was born did she fill me with petals of a fragrant golden flower that grows in the fields and is used to stuff pillows.”
Do you want to know more about Emilia's origins, adventures and crazy ideas? Look for the book in your school or city library. And good reading!
