Once upon a time there was a kitten who was very fond of sardines, but rarely found any. One day, he came to a traveling market, where many vendors offered their wares to the public passing by. He noticed a man selling fish and saw a box full of sardines right within his reach. Overwhelmed by hunger, he began to keep watch and, in a moment of distraction from the salesman, he jumped with great agility over the counter and snatched a beautiful sardine that was on display.
The man, enraged, started to run after the cat. But he quickly crossed an open field and only stopped when he reached the banks of a stream, which ran slowly through the pasture. In its clear waters, the cat saw something that filled him with envy: another cat seemed to be close to him, carrying a sardine larger than his own in its mouth. How was it possible? He couldn't admit it!
Without thinking for a moment, the cat jumped into the water, trying to snatch the juicy sardine from the other. Soon he understood that there was no other cat, no other sardine. In fact, he had beheld the image itself, distorted and enlarged, reflected in the water. He had to use all his strength to get out of the water safe and sound. The sardine, however, had disappeared at the bottom of the stream.
He learned a bitter lesson: instead of being content with the sardine he had obtained, he was carried away by ambition and gluttony.
