Bingo is an evolution of a game that has existed in Italy since 1530. “Lo Giuoco Del Lotto” consisted of a kind of lottery held every Saturday.
When he arrived in France in 1770, it came to be called “Le Lotto” and became popular with the wealthiest men in society. The Germans also had, around 1800, a version of the game, but it was a children's toy used to teach math, grammar and history.
Bingo arrived in the United States in 1929 and received the name it has today. Salesperson Edwin S. Lowe decided to rename it because one day, while watching a game, he accidentally heard someone yell “bingo!” instead of “beano”, which was the correct term.
Later, Lowe hired Carl Leffler, a professor of mathematics at Columbia University, to increase the number of combinations on the cards. But the big kick to popularization of the game was given by a Catholic priest from Pennsylvania.
The clergyman thought it would be a good idea to use bingo to raise funds for his church. It ended up hitting it hard.
