Anyone who sees a map of the world today might think that the Earth has always had five continents and that they have all always been in the place they currently occupy. But did you know that since our planet was formed, about 4.5 billion years ago, its surface has been built, destroyed and rebuilt without ceasing? This is because it is divided into about 20 moving pieces – the tectonic plates – and it is on some of them that the continents are located.
