Cecília Meireles was a great writer, one of the greatest in Brazil. She had a special affection for children, but she also dedicated herself to writing poems for adults.
[…] She is considered the main poet of the 20th century. It was Cecília who founded the first children's library in Brazil and published unforgettable poems for children, such as
Mosquito writes and Carolina Necklace. Cecília's verses manage to arouse an interest in poetry in children and also enchant the grown men who are already passionate about good literature. She was born in Rio de Janeiro on November 7, 1901. Her early life was marked by tragedies: her father died before her birth; her mother when she was three years old. The three brothers also died. Therefore, she was raised alone by her maternal grandmother.
As a child, she felt very lonely. The children called her to play, but her grandmother never let them. She was afraid her little girl would get sick.
Cecília was studious and loved to read. At age 9, she wrote her first verses. She also became interested in music and began to learn singing, guitar and violin.
At age 16, she became a teacher. She released her first book, called spectra, with 18 years.
Throughout her journey as a poet, journalist, columnist and storyteller, Cecília Meireles dedicated herself to education, studied folklore, ran a radio program on literature, traveled the world and released dozens of books. In 1934, she fulfilled a dream: she founded the first children's library in Brazil, in the Mourisco pavilion, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
She died in Rio de Janeiro on November 9, 1964, leaving three daughters and an invaluable legacy for Brazilian literature.
