When there were many blacks who fled, they formed fortified groups called quilombos. There were quilombos in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia; the most important, however, was Palmares, in the Serra da Barriga, in the current state of Alagoas. In 1630, during the Dutch invasion of Pernambuco, the blacks, taking advantage of the confusion caused by the war, fled the mills and went to reinforce this quilombo, which had been formed a few years earlier.
