When Brazil was discovered in 1500, the Atlantic Forest, with a hot and humid climate, covered the coast from Rio Grande do Norte to Santa Catarina. Of this area, only 7% remained, mostly in the Southeast.
The Atlantic Forest is the tropical forest with the greatest variety of life forms per square meter. The most common trees are cedar, ipê, jequitibá, pau-brasil, palm and cinnamon. It also has many animals, such as the capuchin monkey, the toucan, the anteater and the golden lion tamarin. This forest is the most diversified on the planet, with more than 25,000 species of plants. The high rate of rainfall throughout the year allows for the existence of rich, dense vegetation, with trees that reach 30 meters in height.
