They are agile insects, of small to medium size – generally ranging from one to three centimeters – and that feed essentially on other insects and plants – therefore, they are considered omnivores. We say “essentially” because the versatility of feeding these insects is enormous. Imagine that it is possible to breed some species in the laboratory, using fish food and oatmeal, but if you are offered lettuce leaves and leftover food, they will eat too.
Crickets have antennae with more than 30 parts and as long as their body. Speaking of body, crickets are divided into head, thorax and abdomen. At the end of the abdomen, females have a long, cylindrical structure, called an ovipositor, through which they release already fertilized eggs.
Crickets have eardrums – organs similar to our ears – which are located – believe me! – on the front legs. Another curious feature of these animals is the production of sounds, although not all crickets have the ability to "sing". Only crickets that have wings can emit "cri-cri-cri".
And for a very simple reason: to produce the sound, you have to rub one wing against the other. Therefore, wingless crickets do not “sing”. Another important detail: only the males are able to make the noise.
