Contrary to what many people imagine, the diet of athletes who stand out in national and international competitions is very similar to that of non-athletes. What makes a difference are the combinations and times they eat.
To better understand this story, you need to know that nutrients – that is, vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids – contained in food have specific roles in our body. So let's go!
Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are called macronutrients because we need large amounts of them in our daily lives. Vitamins and minerals are called micronutrients precisely because the body needs them in smaller amounts. But let's be clear: although our body needs more of some than others, all nutrients are absolutely essential for health.
