About 90 million years ago, they lived in the eastern Amazon, more precisely in part of what is now the Maranhão, relatives of turtles, alligators and crocodiles, as well as fish, marine reptiles and even dinosaurs! Who proves it are the fossils found in the region.
Marine reptiles were mosasaurs and plesiosaurs. They reached about seven meters in length and were among the largest predators of the seas of their time. The first was a type of carnivorous lizard, which fed on fish, sharks, birds, smaller mosasaurs and even large molluscs that existed at the time, some up to two meters long. length. Plesiosaurs, on the other hand, had a long neck and large fins, reminiscent of the Scottish legend of Loch Ness monster.
But… what about dinosaurs? Oh, surely you would be impressed by the Carcharodontosaurus. It had teeth similar to those of the great white shark, reached up to 14 meters in length and played, in the Amazon, a role comparable to that of the Tyrannosaurus rex practiced in North America. After all, both were the biggest predators in the region where they lived and fed in a similar way. O Carcharodontosaurus, for example, ate the large herbivorous dinosaurs that lived in Maranhão.
already the spinosaurus was another dinosaur that lived in the Amazon. It could also reach 15 meters in length, with evidence in Africa that it could reach 17 meters in length and four or five meters in height. According to some scholars, it fed mainly on fish. Its name means “spiny lizard” and was given because of the large, skin-covered spines that the animal displayed on its back. The skin covering these spines was probably colored, being an attraction to the opposite sex.
