Make your own compass!

The compass is an instrument that has been used for centuries for guidance. It basically consists of a needle that always points to the North. You can build a low-precision compass yourself. For this, you will need a magnet (maybe you have one in your fridge), a needle, a cork stopper or a piece of Styrofoam, an adhesive tape, a knife and a bowl of water.

Instructions:

• Cut the cork stopper or the piece of Styrofoam, leaving it about a centimeter high, forming a disc.
• Then, magnetize the needle: pass one of its ends along the side of the magnet about 20 times, always in the same direction, taking care not to make back-and-forth movements.
• Using the tape, secure the needle to the record and place it over a bowl of water. If everything is ok, when you move the needle, it should return to the same position, that is, indicating the North-South direction.
