Blood is made up of plasma, cells and cell fragments. Yellowish in color, with plenty of water, plasma represents a little more than half of the blood's constitution and contains proteins, sugars, fats, enzymes, vitamins and hormones. Plasma charges and exchanges materials needed by cells. This is the liquid part of the blood.
In the most solid part of the blood are platelets, leukocytes (or white blood cells) and erythrocytes (or red blood cells). When bleeding starts, in a wound, it is exactly the platelets that help to stop this bleeding, as they participate in the clotting process. Platelets are also known as thrombocytes.
Leukocytes are your body's guards. They have different forms and functions, related to the defense of the organism against the presence of foreign elements: leukocytes identify, attack and destroy the body's invaders, such as bacteria.
Red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, contain hemoglobin, which is responsible for the characteristic red color of blood. They are responsible for gas exchange, having the function of transporting oxygen from the lungs.
