Plastic scraps and other objects that are not properly disposed of can be very harmful to seabirds.
The brown boob is a sea bird that can be found all over the Brazilian coast. The species nests on islands, and both males and females feed and care for their newborn chicks. These birds seem to lead a quiet life, but a danger is getting closer to them: garbage.
Instead of using just sticks, leaves, and other natural materials to accommodate their young, the brown booby parents also use lines. of nylon, pieces of Styrofoam, metal objects, cigarette butts, in short, any material left by humans in the vicinity of the islands. The contact of offspring with pollution from the beginning of their lives can pose a threat to certain species of seabirds, including the brown booby.
There are two big risks. The first is entanglement in ropes, lines and fishing nets, which can cause suffocation or fracture of the wings and legs, and death to the animals. The second is when the puppy swallows small pieces of plastic, sponges, hooks and other items, which can cause choking, choking or internal sores in your digestive tract, and can also cause your death.
Brazil is among the 20 countries that dump the most waste into the oceans: around one million tons a year. All this waste remains in the sea for a long time – plastics and nylon, for example, for up to 500 years, because its decomposition is slow. Birds constitute the group of animals with the largest number of species directly affected by the garbage that humans dump into the ocean. What cardboard is ours, huh?!
